Nonetheless, this growing trend shows us that the gig economy is not looking to stop any time, so it's time we accept it and learn about its pros and cons, and its cash can make us billionaires quickly.
Working in the gig economy lets workers maximize their freedom, level up their skill set and choose what they want to do. Moreover, gig workers benefit from being highly flexible, having a better work-life balance, job enrichment, autonomy, performing challenging work, and doing multiple assignments simultaneously, giving them higher income.

Employers in the gig economy can save money and resources by not hiring full-time workers. Furthermore, they can hire experts in various fields for special projects that they wouldn’t be able to hire full-time. Plus, they do not have to provide employee health benefits and do not need to provide training or equipment for gig workers.
Lastly, customers in the gig economy are left with more choices and conveniences for personal services, making the whole market productively efficient, allocative efficient, and sustainable as the market is highly competitive.
Now, coming to talk about the controversies regarding the gig economy. Gig workers are in vulnerable positions as no specific acts have been introduced in their benefits; also, gig workers need more benefits such as health insurance or ones that full-time workers get. Even employers are not required to pay them minimum wage. According to WHO and ILO, a report published in 2021 said the expansion of the gig economy can be seen as one significant factor for the increase in worker deaths for those who work over 55 hours a week (relative to those who work 35–40), rising from 600,000 deaths in 2000 to 750,000 in 2016
Gig workers can have a disruptive work life if they are not able to function per a schedule, and as seen, many suffer from severe clinical depression. Also, inconsistent and insecure income plays a vital role, resulting in high anxiety among gig workers.
The gig culture also makes workplace relations difficult, meaning there will be less social interaction and less bonding among workers. The gig workers will also be unable to develop their skills and career because of the constant switching of jobs.
The gig economy is rising faster than ever in the post-pandemic era. Legislators are introducing new laws for the gig economy and benefits typically given in 9-5 jobs. The introduction of AL played an essential role in the change. We expect the gig economy to be the next big thing for our world and will bring changes that will affect the world economy. The picture below is an example of it.
